Bags - Satchels & Top-Handle
What is the difference between a tote bag and a satchel? It’s often used interchangeably because the definition of a satchel is "a handbag holding books." Many people use a tote bag to carry a load of books, but it doesn’t automatically make that a satchel.
An easy way to tell the difference is the satchel, also known as a top handle bag, can usually be closed at the top, whereas the tote bag cannot. Other significant differences are how the bag is carried and its shape. A satchel is typically rectangular, flat on the bottom, has one or two top handle(s), and an additional strap long enough to be worn as a crossbody. For this reason, many satchels will also appear in the crossbody bag collection, and sometimes the tote bag will be in the satchel collection, even when technically the bag doesn't belong there. But you'll be one the wiser.
